Lonica Smith is an attorney in the Real Estate Department of Phillips Nizer LLP, where she represents owners and developers in the acquisition, financing, and disposition of real property and related assets, zoning and land use matters, and commercial real estate litigation, including foreclosures and workouts. Ms. Smith is experienced in all aspects of commercial real estate transactions and is able to guide her clients through the planning, development, and financing of their projects to successful completion and sale.
Prior to joining Phillips Nizer, Ms. Smith served as both an Assistant Corporation Counsel and Senior Counsel to the City of New York, representing the City in various real estate matters and gaining valuable insight into governmental and administrative processes. She also has extensive experience in the courtroom and has served as lead counsel in several trials and various appellate proceedings; providing her with a unique perspective at the negotiating table.
Ms. Smith is a former adjunct assistant professor for the law department of St. Johns University, Peter J. Tobin College of Business, where she taught several courses including Property and the Uniform Commercial Code. She has authored several articles, including co-authoring two recent articles for the New York Law Journal on transfers of development rights. Ms. Smith currently serves as president of her Upper West Side cooperative board of directors.
