French Practice

The French Practice at Phillips Nizer LLP is a vibrant practice that draws upon the expertise of attorneys in our Corporate & Business Law, Fashion, Intellectual Property and Tax Departments.  The practice is an integral part of Phillips Nizer's broader International Practice and regional European Practice.

What sets Phillips Nizer's French Practice apart from other similar practices at other U.S. law firms?

Our clients appreciate that the French Practice at Phillips Nizer goes beyond comprehension of the French language.  Our attorneys are not only experienced corporate and commercial lawyers, but through decades of representation of French nationals launching new ventures and pursuing personal investments in the United States, we have developed an acute understanding of French business and cultural practices  as they relate to those of our own country.  Our attorneys work in cooperation and collaboration with our clients’ French counsel and advisors on a wide variety of matters to ensure the success of a client’s endeavors.

In an effort to foster closer relationships with our clients and other business associates, members of our practice travel frequently to France.  We see ourselves as a “gateway” and intermediary between clients and other connections in our professional network beyond the legal sector, such as those in finance, making introductions whenever necessary.

We believe Phillips Nizer’s size affords our French clients  the opportunity to work closely with “their” attorneys at the firm, as they would at home, while at the same time having access to the guidance of specialists in a wide range of subject matter corresponding to their needs..  As a mid-sized New York law firm, we offer an efficient and cost-effective alternative compared to larger, global firms without “over-lawyering”.

Attorneys in Phillips Nizer's French Practice counsel clients in the following areas, among others:

  • Establishment of business interests in the United States, whether through outright acquisition of an American enterprise, establishment of a partnership or joint venture with a U.S.-based entity, launching a new business activity or a start-up venture or  expansion of French businesses within the U.S.;
  • Real estate investments, including the development and leasing of commercial, office and retail spaces;
  • Business tax planning, including providing counsel on the selection of the appropriate form of organization for new enterprises, as well as identifying the most desirable method of re-organizing, acquiring or disposing of a business or business asset;
  • Financing and expansion of fashion, apparel and luxury goods retailers, including confectioneries;
  • Protection of intellectual property portfolios, as well as trademark registration and defense.

Industries served by attorneys in our French Practice include:

  • Fashion and Apparel;
  • Hospitality, including food establishments, spas and hotels;
  • Real Estate – investment, development and leasing;
  • Technology, including e-commerce, online services, media and software;
  • Manufacturing, including the automotive and chemical industries;
  • Publishing, with clients in magazines, newspapers and books;
  • “Green” products such as natural ingredients for cosmetics, personal care products and food flavorings and ingredients.

To the extent appropriate, the French Practice will seek the expertise of senior attorneys across the firm's broader International Practice and regional European Practice.  At Phillips Nizer LLP, we view each specialty practice as part of a larger organic firm of knowledgeable professionals, all of whom are available when and as their respective skills may be useful. For our French clients, the contribution of other specialists within the firm will always be under the coordination of the client’s primary attorney.

The firm can provide counsel to French clients in the areas of litigation and arbitration, labor and employment, individual tax and estate planning, as well as wealth transfer and succession planning and trust formations.  Additionally, legal practitioners in our firm can be called upon for immigration representation involving visas, work permits and establishing permanent residences for executives and skilled workers.
