Ally Law: Meet Sumana Murthy - Young Leader from New York03/23/2021
What is your primary area of practice, and what drew you to it?
I’m a commercial real estate lawyer, with a background in general corporate law. I am drawn to the business of real estate and its interplay with corporate and land use law. I enjoy the thrill of closing a deal.
Tell us about a recent memorable project, matter or case that you’ve worked on. What was fun? What was challenging?
Recently we worked on an acquisition of a multifamily property newly constructed in an opportunity zone. Financed by investors and a lender, the acquisition involved drafting complex corporate agreements, negotiating involved loan agreements, understanding nuanced tax implications, obtaining necessary state and municipal approvals, and even commencing a litigation. Additionally, the project construction was delayed due to COVID-19, and our legal team had to work creatively and efficiently to navigate through the many issues that arose to close on an acquisition of this scale during a global pandemic.
Since the pandemic, what is one thing that has improved in your life?
Through the Ally Law Young Leaders Development Program, I’ve learned to network and build connections over digital platforms which has enabled me to grow my professional contacts in places far beyond my geographic location.
And now, a wild-card question: What’s your favorite place to visit and why?
I’m an avid traveler and I certainly miss the excitement of visiting a new city. My favorite place so far has been a remote beach along the coast of Brazil, south of Rio de Janeiro. I hope to visit my Ally Law colleagues in other countries once we can travel again!
