Copyright Webinar | Intellectual Property and Fashion Law Partners Helene M. Freeman and Jeremy D. Richardson addresses copyright infringement lawsuits and the lucrative business of infringement actions by copyright owners against vendors
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT | On Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM ET, Intellectual Property and Fashion Law partner Helene Freeman was a featured presenter on the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) webinar, “Copyrights, Ransom and (Bet the Company) Lawsuits: Avoiding the Troll Under The Next Bridge”. The webinar highlighted the seriousness of copyright infringement and the now lucrative business of infringement actions by copyright owners against vendors.
The possibility of receiving large monetary awards in damages has enticed copyright owners to file hundreds of infringement lawsuits in recent years. Vendors may unknowingly use designs owned by others including designs provided by suppliers who have assured that these designs are “open source” or “public domain”, are now on the radar of copyright owners. These infringement actions can result in damage awards reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars plus attorneys’ fees.
