Galligan Elected Member of International Academy of Estate and Trust Law
Phillips Nizer Partner Michael Galligan has been elected as a member of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. Mr. Galligan concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning and estate and trust administration.
Since beginning his career in trusts and estates, Mr. Galligan has had a special emphasis on matters that cross national boundaries. In this capacity, he advises and represents fiduciaries in complex transnational estates involving conflicts between the tax regimes, property laws and inheritance rules of different countries. In connection with the international aspect of his practice, Mr. Galligan also advises clients on immigration law. Mr. Galligan is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and currently chairs the Committee on International Estates and Trusts of the International Law Section of the New York State Bar
The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law concentrates on analyzing the substantive requirements and tax consequences of the transfer of wealth. In that regard, the Academy studies entities through which wealth is transferred, such as corporations, partnerships, common law trusts, statutory trusts, and foundations. Further, it delves into the use of such entities to preserve family businesses with multinational contacts. While Academy members practice or have offices in 26 countries, membership is highly selective, with limits on the number of Academicians from each country. Additionally, all members must have practiced estate and trust law for at least ten years and have distinguished themselves through lecturing, writing or participating in professional organizations.
