NEW YORK – Michael W. Galligan, a trust and estates partner at Phillips Nizer LLP, will be a featured speaker at the New York State Bar Association’s International Estate Planning Institute. The institute is being held Thursday, March 10 and Friday, March 11 at the Southgate Tower in New York City. Mr. Galligan will be the opening speaker on Friday, March 11, at which time he will discuss estate tax treaties.

The International Estate Planning Institute will cover all aspects of estate planning for individuals who own properties and have assets in various countries, such as: U.S. citizens who are investing or residing outside of the United States; nonresident aliens who own U.S. assets or who are moving to the United States; U.S. citizens who want to establish offshore trusts; or multinational families with members residing in the U.S. and other countries. Speakers include some of the world’s leading experts on international estate planning.

Mr. Galligan practices primarily in the areas of estate planning and estate and trust administration.  Since the beginning of his career in trusts and estates, Mr. Galligan has had a special interest in matters that cross national boundaries.  He advises and represents fiduciaries in complex transnational estates involving conflicts between the tax regimes, property laws, and inheritance rules of different countries.  He regularly advises foreign clients who contemplate becoming U.S. residents or domiciliaries about appropriate estate and income tax planning steps that should be taken before they become U.S. persons.  He also advises clients about the use of offshore trusts and the complex rules regarding the use of foreign trusts by U.S. persons and non-U.S. persons with significant U.S. assets.
