Counsel in the Firm’s Corporate and Trusts & Estates Law Departments
Career Highlights Included Service to the
Fashion and Apparel Industries and Life Insurance Industry

New York, NY – It is with great sadness that Phillips Nizer LLP announces the passing of our distinguished colleague and friend, Herbert “Herb” J. Goodfriend, who for 14 years served as counsel in the Corporate and Trusts & Estates Law Departments.  Herb concentrated his practice in the areas of corporate law, general business law and estate planning, and joined Phillips Nizer in 1993 from the law firm of Summit, Solomon & Feldesman.

“Herb combined a keen business mind with sound legal judgment,” said Perry S. Galler, Phillips Nizer’s Managing Partner.  “He was dedicated to all of his clients whether they were as large and prominent as Jones Apparel or middle-class couples dealing with estate planning issues.”

Among his many accomplishments, Herb served as Vice Chair and Director of Jones Apparel Group, Inc., and also as Director, Halmode Apparel, Inc., Venice Industries, Inc. and Chesapeake Life Insurance Company.  He was appointed by the Appellate Division as Master, Supreme Court, New York County where he served for two years from 1977 to 1979.  From 1980 to 1987, he served as Associate Counsel and General Counsel for the New York Board of Trade.  Herb was also an author, writing for publications such as Law Office Management and the New York Law Journal.  He was the former National President of Tau Delta Phi from 1956 to 1960.

Herb attended New York University, graduating in 1947 with a B.A. degree, and an LL.B. and LL.M. from the School of Law in 1950 and 1953, respectively.  He was a member of both the New York State and the American Bar Associations where he chaired several committees.
The entire Phillips Nizer family extends its most sincere condolences to Herb’s family—daughters Sandy and Pennelope, and son-in-law Matthew, and his grandchildren.  He will be missed.
