Mr. Landis, Chair of the Real Estate Department, maintains a diverse real estate and corporate transactional practice focused on the acquisition, development and preservation of affordable housing, commercial leasing matters, the representation of lenders and borrowers in real estate financing transactions, loan workouts and foreclosures, and the representation of cooperative corporations and condominium associations. His practice also includes the acquisition and sale of residential and other real estate properties, providing ongoing general corporate and estate planning advice to individuals and closely-held businesses, guardianship matters, and Cuban travel-related transaction licensing and compliance. Mr. Landis is the firm's official member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
In 2009, Mr. Landis was elected to the executive board of the Council of New York Cooperatives and Condominiums. He serves as the chairperson of the New York City chapter of Citizen Action of New York, a grass-roots community-based organization involved in efforts to improve health care, provide quality education and reform the campaign finance system, and is also an elected Democratic Party district leader on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where he acts as a liaison with government agencies and elected officials on behalf of constituents. He formerly served as an officer and member of Community Board 7 in Manhattan, and as a chief of staff and counsel to a member of the New York State Legislature.
In 2007 and 2008, Mr. Landis was honored by Manhattan Legal Services and Legal Services of New York for his pro bono assistance to limited-income tenants who were facing eviction from two womens residences in Manhattan. Previously, he was honored by the New York State Bar Association with the Presidents Pro Bono Service Award for his dedication as an attorney-activist on behalf of community-based health, education and social services organizations. He was also selected as a Super Lawyer in 2009 for Real Estate in the Metro New York area. Currently, Mr. Landis serves as pro bono counsel to many educational, religious, community and block associations.
Mr. Landis holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, an LL.M in Taxation from the New York University School of Law and a Bachelors degree from Princeton University. He is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association (Business Law, Real Property Law, Trusts and Estates Law Sections), the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association (Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Committee).
