Hon. Arthur F. Engoron (ret.) is Senior Counsel in the firm’s Litigation Practice.

The Hon. Arthur F. Engoron advises attorneys and clients on litigation strategy, case assessment, motion practice, and trial preparation. His perspective as a long-serving trial judge provides valuable insight into how courts evaluate arguments, manage cases, and approach resolution. Justice Engoron retired from the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, on December 31, 2025, after more than two decades of judicial service.

Prior to joining Phillips Nizer, Justice Engoron served as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, New York County for over a decade.  Justice Engoron handled complex commercial disputes, employment matters, insurance disputes, personal injury actions, medical malpractice cases, real estate disputes, construction litigation, and Article 78 proceedings, etc. He regularly presided over dispositive motion practice, discovery disputes, evidentiary hearings, bench trials, jury trials and settlement conferences.

Prior to his election as a State Supreme Court Justice in 2015, Justice Engoron served as an Acting Justice and as a New York City Civil Court Judge, and as the principal law clerk to Justice Martin Schoenfeld.  He was associated with the law firms of Pryor Cashman and Olwine Connelly before going into public service.

Justice Engoron remains actively engaged in mentoring law students and former clerks and participates in educational programs designed to introduce high school students to the legal profession. In his “spare time,” he also runs the Wheatly School Alumni Association.  He earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his B.A. in English Literature from Columbia University.
