Phillips Nizer Endorses Principles of Legal Independence and Professional Responsibility

01/26/2026
New York, NY — January 21, 2026 — Phillips Nizer announced today that the firm has signed the Legal Principles of Independence and Professional Responsibility, a statement developed to reaffirm core values of the legal profession, including independence of counsel, ethical advocacy, and respect for the rule of law.

The principles were authored by a bipartisan group of retired federal judges and legal leaders and are intended to provide a set of principles of legal independence, a reaffirmation of values and obligations designed to guide and to strengthen law firms, bar associations, law schools, businesses, and nonprofits. The statement emphasizes longstanding professional obligations, including the duty to represent clients without improper influence, to act with integrity and candor, and to uphold the independence essential to the fair administration of justice.

Phillips Nizer’s decision to sign reflects the firm’s long-standing commitment to ethical practice and professional responsibility across all areas of its work.

“The strength of our legal system depends on the independence and integrity of the profession,” said Marc Landis, Managing Partner of Phillips Nizer. “These principles reinforce values that have long guided our work and are essential to maintaining trust in the rule of law.”

Phillips Nizer encourages other law firms, attorneys, and legal organizations to review the principles and consider adding their names in support. Those interested in endorsing the principles may sign publicly at: https://keepourrepublic.org/what-we-do/initiatives/legal-principles/
